Affordable housing is a phrase used to cover a number of schemes designed
to help people on modest incomes, living in areas of high house prices
buy a home.
The schemes are usually run by a housing association or council.
Being eligible for these schemes will depend on your occupation, your
circumstances and the area you live. Different criteria is used to decide
who is given preference – some may give preference to families with
children and some schemes are only available to key workers such as
police, nurses and teachers.
In some areas, there may not be any shared ownership schemes or they
may have long waiting lists.
To find out more about these affordable housing schemes contact your
local council who will be able to give you details of any affordable
housing schemes or housing associations in your area.
Or contact the Housing Corporation, the government agency funding new
affordable housing and whom regulates housing associations in England.
Their phone number is 0845 230 7000.
